Pilot’s Seat: privacy and support
Privacy policy for the Pilot’s Seat app
In short
- Pilot’s Seat shows simulated cockpit instruments from your phone's own sensors. It is entertainment, not a navigation aid.
- Your location, motion and pressure data are processed on your phone only. They are never sent to us or to anyone else.
- There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
- Two things leave the phone: a crash report to Sentry when the app fails (you can switch this off), and a weather request to aviationweather.gov while you have a route planned (it carries your IP address, not your route).
- Flights you export (GPX) and sensor recordings leave the phone only when you share them yourself.
1. Who is responsible
The controller for the processing described here is Sebastian Schulte am Hülse, Hildebrandstr. 43, 70191 Stuttgart, Germany, email info@sapifex.com (see the imprint).
2. Data that stays on your phone
The app reads your phone's satellite position (GNSS), its motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) and, where the phone has one, the pressure sensor (barometer). From these it computes the instrument displays, the moving map and the flight statistics. All of this happens on your phone. None of these readings are transmitted to us or to any other party.
What the app stores on your phone: your settings (for example the chosen instrument skin or a planned route), the flight archive (the satellite positions and statistics of your past flights) and, only if you switch it on in the Developer menu, sensor recordings of your flights. You can delete archived flights and recordings in the app at any time, and uninstalling the app removes everything it stored.
Permissions. The app asks for your location "while using the app". It never asks for "always" access. On iOS, the position can continue to be read in the background only if you switch on "GPS in the background" in the menu and only while a flight is being recorded; iOS shows its location indicator meanwhile. The operating system may also ask for permission to use the motion sensors.
3. Crash reports
To find and fix errors, the app sends a report to our service provider Sentry (Functional Software, Inc., USA; data stored in Sentry's EU region, Germany; a transfer to the USA, e.g. for support, is covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework) when it crashes or an error occurs. A report contains the technical course of the error (program code involved), the app version, the device model, the operating system version, the app's state at the time (e.g. which display was active, whether the sensors were calibrated, whether a satellite fix was available) and a random identifier of the installation. It contains no location, route, flight number, sensor readings, name or account. Your IP address is used only to transmit the report and is not stored. Legal basis is our legitimate interest in a working app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Reports are deleted after 30 days. You can switch crash reports off at any time under Menu → About → "Send crash reports".
4. Weather warnings from aviationweather.gov
While you have a route planned in the app and the app is open on the screen, it downloads the current worldwide list of SIGMET weather warnings from aviationweather.gov, a service of the Aviation Weather Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The request is the same for every user: it contains neither your route nor your position nor any identifier. As with every web request, the server receives your phone's IP address, and the app identifies itself with its name and version. The download repeats about every 10 minutes while a route is planned; there is no download without a planned route and none in the background. We receive nothing from this request. NOAA's own rules apply to its server (NOAA privacy policy). Legal basis is our legitimate interest in showing the weather along the route you chose (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). If you do not want this request, do not plan a route in the app.
5. Files you share
You can export an archived flight as a GPX file and, from the Developer menu, share sensor recordings. These files leave your phone only when you share them yourself through your phone's share sheet. From then on the rules of the app or service you share them with apply.
6. No account, no analytics, no advertising
The app has no user account and no login. It contains no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, and it does not use cookies or similar identifiers. Apart from the crash reports and the weather request described above, the app makes no network connections.
7. In-app purchases
The app currently offers no in-app purchases and processes no purchase data.
8. Your rights and how to request deletion
Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable form, and to complain to a data protection supervisory authority (in Germany, the authority of your federal state).
To exercise these rights or to request deletion, email info@sapifex.com. Everything the app stores is on your phone: you delete it in the app or by uninstalling. The only data we hold are crash reports. They carry no name, account or location, and the random installation identifier is not shown in the app, so to find your reports please tell us your device model, the operating system version and the approximate date of the crash. We then delete the matching reports; in any case they are deleted automatically after 30 days.
9. This website
This page is hosted on GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc., USA). When you open it, GitHub's servers receive your IP address and the usual technical data of a web request and keep them in their logs under GitHub's privacy statement. We do not set cookies and do not use analytics on this page.
10. Changes
The current version of this policy is always available at this address. The date at the top says when it was last changed. The app's store listings link here.
Datenschutzerklärung für die App Pilot’s Seat
Kurz gesagt
10. Änderungen
